Reason is less configuration. If somebody wants to describe acronym, he does not have to change table first.
Less configuration, less error-prone.

If you define acronym like this:
TCP | Transfer Control Protocol |
TCP becomes underlined and on hover it shows "Transfer Control Protocol"
it would be nice if this also becomes a link to Wiki page "TransferControlProtocol", so if someone wants to define it, he can without changing acronym table.

You might take a look at the AutoWikifyPlugin. With that plugin installed, the Acronym would become a link to a wiki page as soon as you create the wiki page.

Why? The current behaviour is intentional.
